Telangana’s Future City Without ACs Draws Global Attention

The Telangana government is building a Future City without ACs as part of its long-term development vision. This ambitious project aims to attract global attention by promoting sustainable and energy-efficient urban living. Spread across nearly 30,000 acres, the Future City without ACs will rely on advanced cooling technology instead of traditional air conditioners.

To achieve this goal, the government has adopted a District Cooling System (DCS) as a core policy. The system will replace individual AC units in homes, offices, and commercial buildings. Officials say this move will reduce power consumption and lower environmental impact across the city.

Under the District Cooling System, a central plant will cool water to around 5 degrees Celsius. Underground pipelines will deliver this chilled water to buildings. Each structure will use Air Handling Units (AHUs) to control indoor temperatures. After cooling the rooms, the system will return the warm water to the plant for reuse. This process will run continuously and efficiently.

The government estimates that the Future City without ACs will save up to 30% electricity compared to conventional air conditioning systems. It will also reduce peak power demand during summer months. Officials believe this will help prevent power shortages and cut carbon emissions.

This innovative cooling model is a key feature of the Telangana Vision 2047 document. The Future City will include dedicated zones such as an Artificial Intelligence City, Health City, Education Hub, and Life Sciences Hub. These sectors will support technology-driven growth while maintaining environmental balance.

Urban heat and rising AC usage have made city life uncomfortable in recent years. The government sees the Future City without ACs as a long-term solution to this growing problem. By reducing dependence on air conditioners, the project aims to improve public health and urban comfort.

Once completed, the Future City without ACs is expected to set a global benchmark for climate-friendly urban planning. Telangana hopes this project will position the state as a leader in smart, sustainable city development.
