Mohanlals Mother Shanthakumari Passes Away at 90 Malayalam Film Industry in Mourning
Mohanlal mother Shanthakumari death has left the Malayalam film industry and fans deeply saddened. Legendary Malayalam actor Mohanlal’s mother, Shanthakumari Amma, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kochi.

According to family sources, Shanthakumari had been suffering from age-related health issues for some time. Despite medical care, she breathed her last on Tuesday morning. Consequently, the family confirmed that her funeral will be held on Wednesday in the presence of close relatives.
Soon after the news broke, condolences poured in from across the Malayalam film industry. Political leaders, actors, directors, and fans expressed their grief on social media. As a result, the tragic news became a major topic of discussion across Kerala.
Mohanlal’s Emotional Bond With His Mother
Mohanlal has often spoken about his close bond with his mother. He previously revealed that Shanthakumari took immense pride in his achievements. Notably, she shared his joy when he received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in cinema.
Moreover, Mohanlal’s late father, Viswanathan Nair, served as a government employee. The family maintained a simple and disciplined lifestyle, which strongly influenced Mohanlal’s values and career.
Mohanlal’s Legendary Career Across Indian Cinema
Mohanlal began his acting journey in 1978 with Thiranottam. However, Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980) brought him recognition as a leading actor. Over the years, he built an unmatched legacy in Malayalam cinema.
In addition, Mohanlal gained popularity among Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi audiences. He proved his versatility as an actor, producer, singer, and theatre artist. Therefore, fans often call him the “Complete Actor.”
National Honours and Recent Work
The Government of India honoured Mohanlal with the Padma Shri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2019). Recently, he also received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Meanwhile, Mohanlal’s latest film Taurus, directed by Nanda Kishore, released pan-India on December 25 as a Christmas special. However, despite a high budget, the film did not meet audience expectations.
