Santiago Martin, infamously known as the Lottery King, is a Coimbatore-based businessman often in the spotlight for his alleged illegal activities. Recently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) uncovered shocking details about his businesses, revealing an annual turnover of ₹15,000 crores from illegal lottery operations.
Adding to the controversy, Martin reportedly donated ₹154 crores to Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) through electoral bonds, sparking widespread curiosity and criticism.
Lottery King: A Controversial History of Political Funding
Santiago Martin’s political donations have been controversial. In early 2024, exposed that Martin sponsored electoral bonds worth ₹500 crores for Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, a state where the lottery business is legal. Additionally, reports revealed that Martin funded multiple political parties, contributing a staggering ₹1,300 crores overall.
However, what stands out is Martin’s ₹154 crore donation to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP, despite the lottery being banned in Andhra Pradesh. This raises a pertinent question: What motivated the Lottery King to back a party in a state where his primary business prohibited?
Exploring the Connection with YSRCP
Reports suggest that the previous Andhra Pradesh government under YS Jagan Mohan Reddy explored the idea of introducing state-run lotteries and offshore casinos to boost post-pandemic revenue. A two-member committee, including Jagan’s close advisor, established to study the feasibility of these ventures, drawing inspiration from Goa’s casino industry.
The government projected annual earnings of over ₹10,000 crores from these initiatives. However, facing potential backlash, it abandoned these plans after public criticism. Critics allege that Martin’s financial contributions during 2020–2021 might have been connected to these deliberations.
Though the plans never materialized, YSRCP received significant funding from Martin’s Future Gaming and Hotel Services Pvt. Limited, raising suspicions about the motivations behind his donations.
Enforcement Directorate’s Probe into Martin’s Empire
The ED has been actively investigating Santiago Martin’s illegal operations nationwide. Several assets, believed to be proceeds of criminal activity, have already attached by authorities. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and ED have filed multiple cases against him, exposing large-scale irregularities in his companies.
Despite these legal challenges, Martin’s political contributions continue to raise eyebrows, particularly his association with political parties in states where his business activities are under scrutiny.
