Vizag Permits Restaurants to Open Till Midnight, Bars Excluded

Vizag’s New Midnight Permits for Restaurants

In a recent update, Visakhapatnam City’s Police Commissioner’s Office announced new operating hours for restaurants. Allowing eateries across the city to stay open till midnight. However, bars and bar-restaurants remain restricted to closing at 10:30 pm. These guidelines, set by the Government of Andhra Pradesh under Sections 7(2) and 15(2) of the Andhra Pradesh Shops and Establishments Act 1988. Aim to strike a balance between enhancing business operations and maintaining public safety.

New Guidelines for Eateries and Restaurants

Previously, all eateries were limited to a closing time of 10:30 pm. This early closure was initially implemented post-COVID-19 to curb late-night incidents and manage public safety. With the new regulation, restaurants and eateries (excluding bars) can operate until midnight, extending their business hours by an additional hour and a half. This change brings much-anticipated relief for both restaurant owners and patrons who appreciate the extended dining option.

Bars and Restaurants Still Face Restrictions

Despite the relaxation for eateries, bars and establishments serving alcohol must adhere to the 10:30 pm closing time. The decision to limit these establishments was influenced by concerns over potential crime and public disturbances late at night, as bars are often associated with increased security needs.

Public Reaction and Business Response

The business community has largely welcomed the change, viewing the extended hours as a positive step toward economic recovery. Restaurant owners see the midnight allowance as an opportunity to attract more customers, especially those seeking late-night dining options. However, there are some concerns about the impact on staff working hours and the safety of employees traveling late at night.

Citizens’ Forum Raises Concerns

The Greater Visakha Citizens’ Forum has voiced its concerns over the potential strain on restaurant staff, urging employers to ensure safe working conditions and reasonable shifts for late-night workers. Additionally, they emphasize that while economic benefits are important, the wellbeing of the workforce must remain a priority.

Balancing Business and Safety

This new policy reflects the state’s attempt to support businesses while prioritizing public safety and community concerns. The government aims to maintain a safe environment while accommodating public demand for late-night dining, keeping bars regulated to prevent potential disturbances. For residents and business owners in Visakhapatnam, these guidelines represent a cautious step forward in adapting to the city’s evolving nightlife needs.
