Uttam Kumar Reddy Proposes Godavari Water Diversion
Godavari Water for Manjeera Projects
Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has announced a new plan to solve Hyderabad’s drinking water issues. The plan involves diverting Godavari River water to three key projects: Singur, Manjeera, and Nizam Sagar. These projects will help meet both drinking water and irrigation needs in the region.
The Singur, Manjeera, and Nizam Sagar reservoirs are crucial for the city’s water supply. The Manjeera River, which is a tributary of the Godavari, will provide water to fill these reservoirs. This move aims to address the growing demand for water due to Hyderabad’s rapid population increase and agricultural needs.
Solving Drinking Water Shortages
The main goal of this initiative is to provide a long-term solution to Hyderabad’s drinking water shortage. The city’s population has surged in recent years, putting pressure on existing water sources. By diverting Godavari water to the Manjeera projects, the storage capacity of these reservoirs will increase. This will ensure a reliable water supply for Hyderabad’s residents.
Boosting Agricultural Irrigation with Godavari
In addition to drinking water, the diversion will help boost irrigation for agriculture. The Singur, Manjeera, and Nizam Sagar projects will supply water to new agricultural areas. This will allow farmers to irrigate crops more easily and increase productivity. Expanding irrigation coverage will support the livelihoods of many farmers in the region.
Review of Ongoing Projects
Minister Reddy recently held a meeting to review ongoing irrigation projects in the Medak district. He also discussed lift irrigation schemes to improve water supply to dry areas. One of the new schemes, the Peddireddy Palli lift irrigation project, is estimated to cost Rs 660 crore. If all procedures are completed, the foundation stone for the project could be laid by December.
The Minister also approved the Karamungi lift irrigation project in the Narayankhed constituency. These projects will improve water access to underserved areas.
Looking Ahead
The plan to divert Godavari waters to the Singur, Manjeera, and Nizam Sagar projects promises to address both Hyderabad’s water supply and agricultural needs. It could set a new standard for managing water resources in fast-growing cities. This initiative will likely support the city’s growth while ensuring water security for its residents and farmers.
