A catastrophic explosion at a pharmaceutical unit in Anakapalli has resulted in 17 fatalities and 33 injuries. The incident occurred at Escientia Advanced Science Pvt Ltd, highlighting severe safety concerns within the industrial sector.
Anakapalli Pharma Unit Incident Overview
On August 21, 2024, a major fire and explosion erupted at Escientia Advanced Science Pvt Ltd in Atchutapuram, Anakapalli district. The explosion, suspected to be related to electrical issues, occurred around 2:15 PM. Fortunately, fewer workers were present due to lunchtime, which mitigated the potential damage.
The fire led to harrowing scenes as injured workers, with severe burns and lacerations, were rushed to nearby hospitals. Rescue operations included the use of ladder vehicles to save 13 people trapped inside the unit.
Response and Investigation at Anakapalli Pharma Unit
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to ensure that injured workers receive advanced medical care. The CM has instructed the use of air ambulance services to transfer critically injured individuals to hospitals in Visakhapatnam or Hyderabad if necessary. Naidu will visit the site on Thursday to meet with families of the deceased and injured workers.
A high-level enquiry into the accident has been ordered, with Naidu promising stringent action against the management if negligence is found. The Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured government support for them.

Escientia Advanced Science Pvt Ltd, which began operations in April 2019, is located in the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation’s (APIIC) multi-product SEZ in Atchutapuram. The company, which invested Rs 200 crore, manufactures intermediate chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). It employs 381 workers in two shifts.

The situation has prompted calls for a comprehensive safety audit and stricter enforcement of safety regulations. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Konidala Pawan Kalyan has also condemned the loss of lives and called for an immediate review of safety protocols at industrial facilities.
