Sub-Classifications in Telangana: A New Era Following SC Ruling

Telangana’s New SC Sub-Classifications

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the state will lead in implementing sub-classifications for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). This follows a recent Supreme Court ruling allowing states to introduce these classifications within the reserved categories.

Chief Minister’s Statement on Sub-Classifications

On Thursday, Revanth Reddy welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision. He assured that Telangana will be the first state to adopt this new policy. The Chief Minister emphasized that the government will include these sub-classifications in current job notifications and will introduce an Ordinance if needed.

Background of the Case

Revanth Reddy recalled the challenges faced when the previous BRS government suspended him for advocating SC classification. After the Congress administration took over, it quickly acted. On December 23, 2023, Telangana’s Advocate General and a team of MLAs, led by Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, presented the case to the Supreme Court. Their efforts, with guidance from legal experts, led to a positive ruling.

Implementation Plans

The Supreme Court’s ruling permits states to divide SCs and STs into sub-groups, named ABCD, for better quota distribution. Revanth Reddy expressed gratitude for this decision. He confirmed that Telangana will start the categorization process soon, aiming to improve reservation effectiveness and ensure fair distribution of benefits.

Looking Ahead

Telangana’s move to implement SC sub-classifications marks a significant policy shift. This approach will likely set an example for other states. The goal is to address the specific needs of different sub-groups within the SC and ST categories, ensuring that resources and opportunities are more equitably shared.
