Secunderabad Railway Station, one of the busiest stations in India, is undergoing a significant transformation. The station’s modernization work aims to provide world-class facilities and bring it on par with modern airports.

History of Secunderabad Railway Station

The history of Secunderabad Railway Station dates back to 1874 when it was built by the Nizam Nawab as the central station of the Nizam Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR). For over 40 years, it served as the heart of the region’s railway network. After the nationalization of the NGSR in 1951, the station became part of Indian Railways, and its main building was constructed in 1952.

The Past: Nizam’s Architectural Legacy

The station’s iconic portico, built in the Nizam’s architectural style, resembles a fort, reflecting the grandeur of the time. This design, symbolic of the region’s rich history, has now become a cherished memory, as the authorities are modernizing the station.

The Present and Future: Modernization of Secunderabad Station

In the coming year, Secunderabad Railway Station will transformed to resemble an airport. The modernization project, which valued at Rs. 720 crore, is progressing at a rapid pace. A comprehensive master plan has prepared to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure and world-class facilities to passengers.

New Features and Infrastructure

The modernization includes the construction of iconic station buildings with G+3 floors on both the north and south sides. These buildings will house retail shops, food stalls, and entertainment facilities to enhance the passenger experience.

Additionally, two travelators, two walkways, 26 lifts, 32 escalators, and two wide footbridges being added. A skyway will provide easy access for passengers, connecting the station’s entrance to the platforms.

Connecting to the Metro

A significant feature of the modernization is the integration of the Secunderabad East Metro Station with the skyway, ensuring better connectivity for commuters. The authorities are also setting up a 5,000-kilowatt solar power plant to meet the station’s energy needs, making the station more sustainable.
