Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Andhra Pradesh on January 8th. This visit marks his first since the NDA government returned to power in June last year. The people of Uttarandhra are eagerly awaiting the fulfillment of a significant promise—the establishment of the Railway Zone in Visakhapatnam.
A Landmark Event for Andhra Pradesh
During his visit, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for the South Coast Railway Zone at the AU Engineering College grounds in Visakhapatnam. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, along with railway authorities, has instructed officials to make all necessary arrangements for this milestone event.
This railway zone project has been delayed for years due to political challenges. However, Modi’s visit now signals a fresh start and renewed commitment to this long-cherished dream.
Key Promise in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014
The creation of the railway zone in Visakhapatnam was a crucial part of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014. Despite its announcement in February 2019, operational work stalled due to delays by the previous government led by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The lack of land transfer to the railway department further compounded the delays.
Renewed Efforts Under the NDA Government
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, efforts to fast-track this project have gained momentum. With the NDA government at both the center and state, the dream of the people of Uttarandhra is finally on the path to realization.
The construction of the General Manager’s office in Visakhapatnam has already begun, with a budget allocation of ₹149 crore. Officials aim to complete the project within two years.
Strategic Importance of the Uttarandhra Railway Zone
The South Coast Railway Zone will include the following divisions:
- Guntakal
- Guntur
- Vijayawada
Visakhapatnam will serve as the headquarters for this zone. Parts of the Waltair Division will integrate with the Rayagada Division under East Coast Railways, while the remaining areas will merge with the Vijayawada Division.
