Naidu’s Vision for Micro Irrigation Silences Critics
Andhra Pradesh Leads the Nation in Micro Irrigation
In a remarkable comeback, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the national leader in micro irrigation, covering 1.17 lakh hectares in the 2024–25 financial year. This achievement has placed it ahead of major states like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
What’s notable is that this progress comes after the state dropped to sixth place under the previous YSRCP administration. With the return of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh not only regained ground swiftly but also surged to first place by implementing strategic reforms.
Turning Rayalaseema into a Horticulture Hub
Thanks to fertigation, a practice that combines micro irrigation with micronutrients, drought-prone regions like Rayalaseema have transformed into flourishing horticulture zones. This revolutionary turnaround is credited to Naidu’s tech-savvy leadership and commitment to sustainable agriculture.
From Criticism to Vindication: Naidu’s Micro Irrigation Journey
Despite being labeled “anti-farmer” by opponents, Naidu was the pioneer of Israeli micro irrigation technology in Kuppam. In fact, former CM Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy even set up the Chalapathi Commission to probe its implementation.
During the inquiry, Naidu endured hours of waiting without lunch, insisting he would eat only after giving his statement. His response reflected his unwavering belief in the technology and personal integrity. The commission ultimately could not fault his efforts.
Laying the Groundwork for a National Model
Naidu had long foreseen the need for efficient irrigation. As the head of India’s Micro Irrigation Task Force, he submitted reports to the Centre emphasizing water conservation, increased crop yield, and economic growth through micro irrigation.
Fast forward to today, Andhra Pradesh contributes 50% of India’s total fruit production, and districts like Anantapur—once drought-ridden—have surpassed fertile regions like Konaseema in agricultural output.
Massive Investment in Micro Irrigation
The state government has invested over ₹1,176 crore in expanding micro irrigation across Andhra Pradesh. Of this:
- ₹328 crore came from the Centre
- ₹598 crore from the state government
- ₹250 crore was contributed by farmers themselves
This demonstrates a collaborative model for sustainable development.
A Tech-Driven Leader With Deep Roots in Agriculture
Naidu’s commitment to agriculture is evident beyond irrigation. He has:
- Sent delegations to Rajasthan to study anti-desertification practices
- Set groundwater conservation targets at every Collector’s Meet
- Championed modern agricultural strategies as part of Andhra Pradesh’s development agenda
A Legacy of Vision and Resilience
From introducing Israeli tech in Kuppam to transforming Andhra Pradesh into a horticultural leader, Naidu’s legacy built on vision, grit, and adaptability. His journey—marked by discipline, even under scrutiny—stands as an inspiration for today’s youth and future leaders.
