Though his political journey saw losses in the 2014 assembly elections from the Nizamabad Urban constituency, his determination remained unshaken.

Mahesh Kumar Goud held various key positions in Congress, such as PCC Secretary, Spokesperson, and General Secretary. In 2018, he withdrew from the Nizamabad Urban ticket race when the party leadership allocated the seat to minorities. In return, he was appointed as the Convener of the Congress Manifesto Committee in the State Election Committee. His continued loyalty and service to the party earned him further recognition, leading to his appointment as PCC Executive President on June 26, 2021.

In December 2022, Mahesh Goud was a special invitee to the Congress Political Affairs Executive Committee. His consistent efforts to strengthen the party culminated in his role as a member of the TPCC Election Committee in June 2023. Although initially expected to contest the 2023 elections from Nizamabad Urban, Goud made way for former minister Shabbir Ali, stepping aside from the race.
