India Shuts Wagah Border, Orders Pakistanis to Leave
Wagah Border Closed: Government Responds Decisively to Pahalgam Attack
In a high-level emergency meeting held in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar led discussions on India’s immediate diplomatic and security response. This comes within 24 hours of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 27 Indian civilians. In response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, India closes the Wagah border expels Pakistani nationals
Wagah Border Closed and Pakistanis Ordered to Leave
The first and most significant decision is the immediate closure of the Wagah-Attari border. In addition, all Pakistani nationals currently in India have been given 48 hours to leave the country. This move marks a historic diplomatic shift and sends a strong message following the recent act of terror.
Indus Waters Treaty Put on Hold
India has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. Though the treaty, signed in 1960 under World Bank mediation, cannot be revoked unilaterally, placing it in abeyance serves as a strong geopolitical signal. The treaty gives Pakistan control over the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers—any disruption could severely affect Pakistan’s agricultural economy.
Diplomatic Expulsions and Visa Cancellations
The Indian government has declared Pakistani military diplomats persona non grata and has ordered their expulsion within seven days. Moreover, SAARC visas for Pakistani citizens have been cancelled, further tightening diplomatic access.
Reduction in Diplomatic Presence and Withdrawals
India has decided to operate its diplomatic mission in Pakistan with only 30 members, significantly reducing its presence. Additionally, all Indian naval and air force advisors posted in Islamabad will be withdrawn immediately.
Nation Stands United
These measures reflect India’s firm stance against terrorism and cross-border hostility. The government is committed to safeguarding national security while ensuring the perpetrators of such heinous acts face serious diplomatic consequences.
