Harish Kumar Gupta Appointed as New DGP of Andhra Pradesh

In a significant development, Harish Kumar Gupta, a senior IPS officer from the 1992 batch, has appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Andhra Pradesh. The order for his appointment was passed earlier today by Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand.

Harish Kumar Gupta’s Background and Appointment

Harish Kumar Gupta, who currently serves as the DG for Vigilance and Enforcement, is a native of Jammu and Kashmir. He will take over the post of DGP from Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, who is set to retire on January 31st. Although Gupta’s appointment for a term of only seven months, there is a possibility that his tenure may be extended. This is due to the lack of suitable candidates to take over the role after his tenure ends.

Previous Role and Selection Process

Before this appointment, Harish Kumar Gupta recommended for the post by the Election Commission of India before the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections. His appointment came after the transfer of KV Rajendranath due to lapses in security during a PM visit in Chilakaluripeta. Which occurred when the model code of conduct was in effect.

Why Harish Kumar Gupta Was Chosen

While other senior IPS officers, including Madireddy Pratap, the DGP of Fire Services, and the suspended Intelligence Chief PSR Anjaneyulu, were in the running for the post, the government ultimately preferred Harish Kumar. The primary reason for his selection was his clean record and impeccable credentials throughout his career.

Legal Challenge and Court Ruling

Recently, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, questioning the government’s decision to appoint Harish Kumar in violation of Supreme Court guidelines for selecting DGPs. However, the High Court dismissed the petition, and the government proceeded to finalize Gupta’s appointment.
