Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed sparked controversy after making derogatory remarks about Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. During the India vs New Zealand match in the ICC Champions Trophy, she took to X (formerly Twitter) and called him “fat for a sportsman” and “the most unimpressive captain in Indian cricket.”

Her now-deleted comments surfaced after Rohit was dismissed for 15 runs off 17 balls. However, his leadership in defending a 249-run total and securing victory earned him praise from fans across the country.

Shama’s remarks faced criticism from not only Indian cricket fans but also Pakistani supporters. A Pakistani journalist defended Rohit Sharma, calling him a world-class performer. In response, Shama doubled down, comparing Rohit unfavorably to Indian cricket legends such as Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli. She went on to claim that Rohit is a “mediocre captain and a mediocre player who got lucky to lead India.”

BJP and BCCI Condemn Shama’s Remarks

Taking advantage of the situation, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari slammed Shama and the Congress party, stating:

“Shame on Congress! Now they are attacking the Indian cricket captain! Do they expect Rahul Gandhi to play cricket after failing in politics?”

Meanwhile, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia also expressed disappointment, calling Shama’s remarks “very unfortunate” and warning that such comments could demoralize the Indian team during a crucial tournament.

Congress Distances Itself From Shama Mohamed’s Comments

As the backlash grew, the Congress party officially distanced itself from Shama’s statements. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera clarified:

“Dr. Shama Mohamed’s remarks about a cricketing legend do not reflect the party’s position. She has been asked to delete the posts and exercise greater caution in the future.”

Following the party’s directive, Shama deleted her controversial tweets.
