Complaint Against Pawan Kalyan for Remarks on Old City Residents
A controversy has erupted over the remarks made by Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan regarding the residents of Hyderabad’s Old City. Following his statements at an election rally in Maharashtra, a complaint was lodged by an AIMIM activist, accusing Kalyan of insulting the people of Old City.
The complaint, filed through a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), tagged Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand and requested action against the actor-turned-politician. The activist alleged that Pawan Kalyan’s comments disrespected the cultural sentiments of Old City residents, particularly those of specific communities.
Pawan Kalyan’s Controversial Statement on Old City Residents
During an election rally in Ballarpur, Maharashtra, held to campaign for Mahayuti candidate and BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar, Pawan Kalyan highlighted the significance of Sanatan Dharma. While addressing the crowd, the Janasena Party chief remarked:
“The people of Old City (Hyderabad) have always criticised the Indian culture and the festivals of India. However, followers of Sanatan Dharma have always respected everyone irrespective of their religion. Followers of Sanatan Dharma, however, will respond to those who disrespect it.”
This statement sparked an uproar among various communities in Hyderabad, especially residents of Old City, who felt targeted by the remarks.
AIMIM Activist Seeks Action
An activist from All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) raised the issue online, calling for immediate action. The activist claimed Pawan Kalyan’s remarks were inflammatory and aimed at dividing communities.
Tagging the Hyderabad Police, the activist sought legal proceedings against the Deputy Chief Minister. The activist also emphasized the need for political leaders to refrain from making comments that could disrupt communal harmony in a culturally rich and diverse region like Hyderabad.
Hyderabad Police’s Response
The Hyderabad Police Commissioner’s Office has acknowledged the complaint and is currently seeking legal advice on how to proceed. In a statement, the police said:
“We are taking legal opinion on how to proceed further on this matter.”
The police have assured that due process will be followed to address the allegations raised against Pawan Kalyan.
Political Reactions
The incident has added fuel to political tensions between Janasena and AIMIM, with leaders from both sides exchanging sharp remarks. Pawan Kalyan’s supporters defended his statements, claiming they were misinterpreted and taken out of context. On the other hand, AIMIM leaders accused him of targeting specific communities to gain political mileage.
