The Telugu film industry mourns the loss of Krishnaveni, a veteran actress, producer, and studio head, who breathed her last at 4 AM due to illness. She played a crucial role in introducing legendary actor Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) to cinema, marking a significant chapter in Telugu film history.
Early Life and Entry into Cinema
Born on December 24, 1924, in Pangidi village, West Godavari district, Krishnaveni had a passion for theater from childhood. Her talent was recognized by director C. Pullaiah, who cast her in the title role of Anasuya after watching her performance in Thulabharam in Rajahmundry. She was only ten years old when she entered the industry.
Journey from Child Actress to Leading Lady
Krishnaveni’s career took a new turn in 1937 when C.S.R. Anjaneyulu took her to Chennai, where she acted in Thukaram. She gained immense popularity through several successful films and even sang her own songs, showcasing her multifaceted talent.
Her voice was later used for Anjali Devi in Keelu Gurram, and films like Lakshmamma and Gollabhama brought her wide acclaim.
A Love Story with Filmmaking Roots
While working on the 1939 film Mahananda, Krishnaveni met Mirzapuram Raja, a renowned director and producer. Their relationship blossomed into love, and they tied the knot in 1940. After marriage, Krishnaveni stepped away from acting in films outside her home banner, dedicating herself to Shobhanachala Studios, which produced numerous movies.
Krishnaveni: The Woman Who Introduced NTR to Cinema
Krishnaveni played a pivotal role in shaping Telugu cinema. She introduced Chadalavada Narayana Rao as a hero in Jeevana Jyothi, the first social film under their banner.
Her most historic contribution was launching Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) through the 1949 film Mana Desam, produced under her M.R.A. banner and directed by L.V. Prasad. The film was based on the Bengali novel Vipradasu.
Krishnaveni Contributions to the Telugu Film Industry
Beyond acting and production, Krishnaveni was instrumental in launching many legendary artists:

She was one of the highest-paid actresses of her era, earning ₹45,000 per film, on par with Bhanumathi. Her last appearance as an actress was in Sahasam, and her final production was Dampatyam in 1957.

For her immense contributions to Telugu cinema, the Andhra Pradesh state government honored Krishnaveni with the Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu Award.
Recently, she attended the Mana Desam Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Vijayawada, where she was honored on stage by former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, despite in a wheelchair.
