Tollywood Needs a ‘Game Changer’ to Fight Piracy
Piracy has always been a persistent problem in the film industry, but with the rise of new technology, it has become an even bigger threat. While technological advancements usually help in tackling issues, in the case of Fight Piracy, they have only made it easier for illegal distribution to thrive. This is evident in recent events, particularly with Tollywood’s Game Changer becoming a victim of piracy.
The Scale of Fight Piracy in Tollywood
Piracy is no longer confined to a small group of individuals. In the case of Game Changer, the issue has reached alarming proportions. From local cable channels illegally broadcasting the movie in Vizag to pirated copies circulating widely, the scale of the problem is undeniable. The producers of Game Changer forced to file a police complaint against 45 individuals, highlighting that this was not a random act but a premeditated conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the film’s success even before its official release.
Piracy: A Growing Concern in Every Corner
What is even more concerning is how accessible pirated copies of Game Changer have become. These copies have been found in unexpected places such as private buses, with individuals from all walks of life—hotel chefs, hospital security guards, and more—watching the illegal content. In one instance, producer Madhura Sreedhar revealed that he caught a hospital security guard watching the film on his mobile phone. This underscores the widespread nature of piracy and the ease with which it can spread.
The Impact of Piracy on Tollywood Films
Game Changer isn’t the only recent film to suffer from piracy. Other films like Daaku Maharaj and Sankranthi Ki Vastunnam have also impacted. However, the problem is especially severe with the rise of high-definition piracy, which compromises the quality and revenue of films even further. The issue is even more pronounced for global movie releases, which screened on thousands of screens worldwide. Tracking the origin of pirated content is both expensive and time-consuming, and often happens long after a film’s theatrical run, resulting in diminished box office collections.
Piracy Beyond Tollywood: The Global Struggle
International OTT platforms are facing similar piracy challenges, making the issue even more complex. While encryption and watermarked copies offer some level of protection, they are not foolproof. Without strict enforcement, piracy will continue to thrive. To truly combat this growing problem, the industry needs to adopt innovative solutions such as blockchain technology for secure distribution, AI-based piracy detection systems, and stronger collaborations with law enforcement agencies to dismantle piracy networks.
A Call for Collective Action
Although there have been some efforts, like the partial success of ETV Win in combating piracy, it is clear that a more structured and long-term solution required. Piracy is a multi-faceted problem that requires collective action from filmmakers, production houses, OTT platforms, and even audiences. Only through cooperation and innovative measures can Tollywood hope to protect its content from the ever-growing threat of piracy.
