Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan recently proposed that the state should establish its own film industry, claiming that this would create more employment and boost tourism. However, his comments have misinterpreted by some, leading to widespread speculation about relocating Tollywood. The truth is, it would be virtually impossible to recreate the infrastructure, ecosystem, and support system that Hyderabad offers for the Telugu film industry.
As Telangana IT Minister Sridhar Babu has pointed out, Hyderabad has long been the heart of the film industry, with an established ecosystem that facilitates film production. No amount of government subsidies or privileges can replace the decades of development and investment that have gone into building Hyderabad into the film industry hub it is today.
The Inseparability of Tollywood and Hyderabad
Film producer Naga Vamshi echoed similar sentiments in a recent press interaction, stating that his base is firmly in Hyderabad, and shifting the industry elsewhere makes no sense. For industry insiders, moving to another state is simply out of the question. Most people in the industry are comfortable with the existing setup in Telangana, and the thought of relocating is not on their radar.
Hyderabad has also earned global recognition thanks to its role in producing pan-India blockbusters like Baahubali, RRR, Pushpa, and others. These films have put the city on the world map, attracting investment and attention from across the globe. No filmmaker would risk sacrificing this established identity for the uncertainty of starting over in a new location.
Film Industry: What’s Really Affecting Tollywood?
The real issues facing the Telugu film industry today have nothing to do with location. The rising cost of production, skyrocketing star salaries, and inflated ticket prices have become significant challenges. Producers and distributors are increasingly feeling the strain of these expenses, and the situation is worsened by the growing popularity of OTT platforms, which provide an alternative to traditional cinema.

Heroes should be more accommodating when it comes to their salaries, while producers need to spend wisely and within the means of the industry.
