Suriya Breaks His No-Smoking Rule for Iconic Rolex Role in Vikram
Suriya Breaks His No-Smoking Rule for Vikram’s Rolex
Suriya is currently on a promotional spree for his highly anticipated film, Kanguva, set to release on November 14. From Mumbai to Chennai, he’s sparing no effort to reach a wide audience, aiming to expand his popularity across India, especially in Hindi cinema. During these promotions, Suriya spoke at length about his role as Rolex in the blockbuster Vikram, which has since become a fan-favorite character.
Preparation for the Intense Role of Rolex
Suriya delved into his experience of portraying Rolex, a character crafted by director Lokesh Kanagaraj. Interestingly, he didn’t receive the script in advance, arriving on set without prior preparation. This spontaneity added to his nervousness, especially as he anticipated sharing screen space with the legendary Kamal Haasan.
“When I arrived on set, the director gave me the scene briefing. We planned for a half-day shoot as Lokesh explained how he envisioned the character,” Suriya shared. His initial hesitation quickly transformed as he took on the intense role, embodying a ruthless persona unlike his previous characters.
Breaking a Personal Rule for Rolex
Despite his prior commitment to never endorse smoking on screen, Suriya chose to make an exception for Rolex, fully immersing himself into the darker side of his character. “I made a promise to myself that I would not smoke on screen, but with Rolex, I realized that it required leaving my personal ideals behind. Playing a villain meant leaving Suriya behind, and I embraced that,” he added.
This decision was significant for Suriya, who has maintained a strong stance against portraying negative behaviors, particularly in the context of a heroic role. However, he felt that Rolex demanded authenticity and that leaving his mark on such a complex character was more important.
A Dream Collaboration with Kamal Haasan and Lokesh Kanagaraj
For Suriya, acting in Kamal Haasan’s production felt like a career milestone. “It’s a dream come true to work under Kamal sir’s production. I credit Lokesh for his support in making the role manageable and memorable. His direction gave me the confidence to consider Rolex for a standalone film,” Suriya said.
He also shared that he hoped to complete his scenes before Kamal Haasan arrived on set, admitting he would have been too nervous to act in front of the legendary actor. Working with Lokesh, who has a distinct approach to character-driven narratives, has not only refined Suriya’s craft but also given him the courage to push boundaries with Rolex.
The Future of Rolex: A Potential Standalone Film
Suriya’s portrayal of Rolex sparked so much enthusiasm that fans are already clamoring for a standalone film dedicated to the character. Suriya expressed that he, too, is considering such a project, acknowledging that Rolex has the depth and complexity to carry a full-length feature. The combination of Suriya’s performance and Lokesh’s visionary direction promises an exciting future, as fans eagerly await to see how the Rolex saga unfolds.
Kanguva Set for Release on November 14
Meanwhile, as fans anticipate the potential Rolex standalone, Suriya is gearing up for the release of Kanguva, directed by Siva. The film is set to hit theaters on November 14 and is expected to showcase Suriya’s versatility. As he continues to push boundaries and take risks with his roles, Suriya remains a force to be reckoned with in Indian cinema.
