Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, after customs officials seized 14.2 kg of gold bars worth ₹14.56 crore.

Authorities from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had been monitoring her movements due to her frequent trips to Dubai—a staggering 27 visits in one year—before intercepting her on Monday night.


Gold Smuggling Network: Ranya Rao’s Alleged Role

Reports indicate that Ranya Rao was allegedly part of a gold smuggling network and received a commission of ₹4-5 lakh per kilogram of gold smuggled from Dubai to Bengaluru.

The investigation revealed that she played an active role in smuggling and was under DRI surveillance for months before her arrest.


Stepdaughter of Senior IPS Officer Ramachandra Rao

Ranya Rao’s arrest has drawn even more attention due to her family background—she is the stepdaughter of senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao.

Following her arrest, DRI officials raided her residence on Lavelle Road, where she lives with her husband, and seized ₹2.06 crore worth of gold jewelry along with ₹2.67 crore in cash.


Legal Battle: Ranya Rao’s Custody Hearing

The Customs Department has sought a four-day custody extension, stating that further interrogation is necessary. However, her lawyer opposed the request, arguing that the DRI had no additional queries when she initially detained.

The court has reserved its order on the custody extension request.
