Kangana Ranaut Rejects Oscar Idea for ‘Emergency’
Kangana Ranaut Emergency Gains Popularity on Netflix
Kangana Ranaut’s latest film, Emergency, may have flopped at the box office, but its digital release on Netflix has sparked new interest. The film, which portrays the 1975 Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, has found a second life among movie buffs and general audiences, gaining traction on social media. As viewers continue to analyze and discuss the film, one social media user suggested that Emergency deserved an Oscar nomination from India. However, Kangana Ranaut was quick to dismiss the idea, offering a strong response.
Kangana’s Strong Reaction: “They Can Keep Their Silly Oscar”
A Twitter (X) user recently praised Emergency and suggested it should be sent to the Oscars from India, writing:
“#EmergencyOnNetflix should go for the Oscars from India. Kangana, what a film.”
While many filmmakers would be thrilled at such a suggestion, Kangana had a different take. Responding to the tweet, she expressed her disapproval of the Oscars, stating that the award lacks credibility when it comes to recognizing films that expose harsh global realities.
She tweeted:
“But America wouldn’t like to acknowledge its real face, how they bully, suppress, and arm-twist developing nations. It’s been exposed in #Emergency. They can keep their silly Oscar. We have National Awards.”
Kangana’s response suggests that she does not seek Western validation and takes pride in India’s National Awards, which she believes hold more significance.
Kangana Ranaut Dual Role as Director and Producer
Emergency marks Kangana Ranaut’s second directorial venture after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Apart from directing, she produced the film under Manikarnika Films, in collaboration with Zee Studios.
The film delves into the turbulent period of India’s Emergency in 1975, when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, leading to severe political and civil unrest. Kangana, known for her bold portrayals, essayed the role of Indira Gandhi in the movie, showcasing her controversial leadership and decisions.
Star-Studded Cast of Emergency
Apart from Kangana in the lead role, Emergency features a talented ensemble cast, including:
- Anupam Kher
- Shreyas Talpade
- Vishak Nair
- Milind Soman
- Satish Kaushik (in one of his final roles)
Despite its poor box office performance, the film has gained critical appreciation for its performances, storytelling, and historical representation.
Final Thoughts: Kangana’s Stand on Western Awards
Kangana Ranaut has always been vocal about her views on international recognition and remains unapologetic about rejecting Western validation. While some Indian filmmakers strive for Oscars and global accolades, Kangana takes pride in India’s own cinematic honors, emphasizing the importance of National Awards over foreign recognition.
As Emergency continues to gain traction on Netflix, the film remains a topic of discussion—not just for its political narrative but also for Kangana’s unfiltered opinions on global cinema and Western influence.
