Devara Set in the 1980s: Koratala Siva Explains His Vision

Koratala Siva’s Unique Approach to Devara’s Setting

In a candid conversation with Gulte, director Koratala Siva opened up about the creative process behind Devara, a much-anticipated film starring Jr. NTR. Despite the high stakes leading up to its release, Siva appeared calm and confident, providing a glimpse into the film’s inspiration and setting choices.

The Birth of Devara: An Inversion of the Superhero Archetype

Koratala Siva shared that the idea for Devara came to him three years ago, driven by a unique twist on the conventional hero narrative. “Usually, in films, the hero is someone full of courage who empowers those filled with fear. But I thought of an opposite scenario,” Siva said. “What if the protagonist is the one full of fear, while everyone else around him is courageous? This inversion of the superhero template gave birth to Devara.”

This intriguing premise sets Devara apart from other action-dramas, offering a fresh take on heroism.

The Role of Time and Place: Why the 1980s?

One of the standout features of Devara is its distinct time period, with the story set in the 1980s and 1990s. Koratala Siva explained the significance of this era in shaping the film’s narrative. “The movie spans across two timelines, and certain events compelled us to pick the 80s and 90s as the time frame. The townsfolk in Devara are full of otherworldly courage, and they inhabit an isolated island to emphasize their uniqueness,” Siva elaborated.

Worldbuilding and Visual Aesthetics

Siva delved deeper into the film’s worldbuilding, especially focusing on the visual elements that define Devara. “The men venture out into the sea late at night. Some of the film’s most crucial parts take place at night, which is why the film is painted in hues of black and dark blue,” he explained. The nighttime sequences create an atmospheric tone, giving the film a unique aesthetic appeal.

Plans for Devara 2 and Koratala siva’s Future

Looking ahead, Koratala Siva hinted at his ideas for a sequel, Devara 2. While he has a few concepts in mind, Siva remains open to improvisation based on audience feedback. “I have some ideas for Devara 2, but I’m willing to adjust based on how the first film is received,” he mentioned. In addition to his current work, Siva expressed his desire to support young filmmakers.
