April’s Final Box Office Face-Off: Small Films Compete for Attention

Summer Box Office Blues: Can Small Films Turn the Tide?

April, traditionally seen as a favorable month for film releases in Telugu cinema, has remained mostly underwhelming this year. With IPL 2025 matches dominating prime time and the absence of star-driven movies, the box office has witnessed a slump. As the month draws to a close, three small-budget films are stepping up to revive theatrical interest: Saranga Pani Jathakam, Chaurya Patham, and Gymkhana.

Saranga Pani Jathakam: A Comedy with a Zodiac Twist

Directed by Indraganti Mohanakrishna, known for his heartfelt, light-hearted storytelling, Saranga Pani Jathakam promises a unique mix of humor and astrology. The film stars Priyadarshi, who returns to comedy after winning praise for his serious role in Court. With Vennela Kishore in a supporting role, this film banks heavily on its comedic charm and the director’s credibility. If early reactions are positive, it could become a sleeper hit.

Chaurya Patham: Crime Thriller From a New Banner

The second release is Chaurya Patham, a crime thriller backed by director Trinadha Rao Nakkina, who previously helmed the blockbuster Dhamaka. This project marks his debut as a producer under Nakkina Narratives. Although it features newcomers, the promotional campaign has leaned into its twist-laden narrative and gritty suspense to create intrigue. Its success will depend on word-of-mouth and audience reception to fresh faces.

Gymkhana: A Malayalam Import With Youth Appeal

Gymkhana is a dubbed Malayalam film headlined by Naslen, who recently found fame with Premalu. The film targets young, urban audiences with a campus-based storyline and vibrant energy. Malayalam films have been steadily gaining traction in the Telugu market, particularly among OTT and multiplex viewers. If Gymkhana gets strong reviews, it could ride that wave.

Will Small Films Click?

So far, April hasn’t delivered a major hit. But with Saranga Pani Jathakam offering comedy, Chaurya Patham bringing suspense, and Gymkhana catering to youth, there’s potential for at least one of these to spark a surprise at the box office. It remains to be seen whether these small films can overcome the IPL effect and bring audiences back to theatres.
